Thomas Armstrong Construction Awarded Key Contract for Port of Workington Regeneration

Thomas Armstrong Construction is pleased to announce the commencement of a significant Demolition & Land Remediation programme at the Port of Workington, having recently been awarded the contract for this major regeneration project.

The scope of work encompasses Tank Farms A & B and the Oldside South site. This comprehensive project is designed to safely clear redundant infrastructure and prepare the sites for future development opportunities, aligning with broader regional economic goals.

Project Scope and Key Activities

The programme is focused on safety, environmental protection, and preparing the site to meet the highest standards for future use. Key activities Thomas Armstrong is progressing include:

  • Dismantling and Demolition: The safe demolition of redundant tanks, buildings, and infrastructure, including the draining, cleaning, and dismantling of large above-ground storage tanks.
  • Contaminant Removal & Remediation: Removal of hazardous materials and redundant services, followed by comprehensive ground remediation, excavation, backfilling, and compaction to prepare the sites for development.
  • Waste Management: Full waste segregation and recycling across the sites in line with stringent WRAP protocols, demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility.
  • Site Preparation: Demolition of structures to slab level, removal of deep foundations, creation of new access points, and site restoration to safe final levels.
  • Environmental Measures: Implementation of ecological protection measures and supporting necessary archaeological investigations.

This redevelopment is a crucial element of the Workington Town Deal. The overall initiative seeks to develop the Port of Workington as a dynamic hub for clean energy, manufacturing, and intermodal logistics.

The successful completion of this project will directly contribute to the realisation of the Port's potential as a modern, forward-thinking industrial and energy centre.
