A Vision for Active Travel
The Abbey Road project is a key component of the wider Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) for Barrow. It's funded through central government's Active Travel Fund 3 and the Brilliant Barrow Town Deal, reflecting a substantial investment in the region's future.
Our team at Thomas Armstrong is tasked with creating a safe and continuous active travel route directly through the town centre of Barrow-in-Furness. Specifically, we will be implementing significant improvements along Abbey Road, between Ramsden Square and its junction with Park Drive.

Connecting Communities and Opportunities
The primary goal of this scheme is to enhance connectivity, making active travel – walking and cycling – a more accessible, safer, and enjoyable choice for residents and visitors. The new, dedicated routes will directly link major employers, shops, and essential facilities to nearby residential areas, fostering easier and more affordable commutes.
This isn't just about convenience; it's about building a better quality of life. By encouraging more people to cycle and walk, the Abbey Road scheme aims to:
- Improve overall levels of health and wellbeing within the community.
- Reduce emissions from vehicles, contributing to fresher air and a cleaner, greener environment.
- Increase the number of people commuting by bicycle, with projections seeing current figures of 4-8% potentially rising to 10-14%, and even up to 25-29% in the long term.
- Boost educational attainment by making travel easier and cheaper between homes and places of learning.
- Enhance Barrow's appeal as a vibrant place to live, work, and visit for generations to come.
Responding to Community Needs
The design of the Abbey Road scheme follows an extensive public consultation period conducted in May 2023 by Westmorland and Furness Council. The confirmed scheme design directly incorporates valuable feedback from respondents and aligns with the latest government guidance, ensuring the project truly serves the needs of the local community. Preliminary works have already begun, and we are excited to accelerate progress on the main construction phases.

As a local firm deeply rooted in Cumbria, Thomas Armstrong Construction is immensely proud to play a pivotal role in delivering this vital infrastructure.
